Andy Robertson is the ideal candidate to become captain of the Scotland national team, Jürgen Klopp believes.

Tartan Army boss Alex McLeish is set to name a new skipper after Celtic’s Scott Brown retired from international football.

And although Robertson is only 23, Klopp has described him as the ‘smart choice’ to take the armband ahead of their friendlies with Costa Rica and Hungary later this month.

“100 per cent yes,” is how the Reds manager replied when asked if his left-back was ready to take on captaincy duties for Scotland.

“We spoke about his development, we spoke about the football things he has to do. I am not sure if I know plenty of the Scotland national team players, but Robbo for sure will be the future.

“He’s a left-back and if you want someone smart he’s a really good option. He was in the team before he was even in the team if you understand.

“He had a close relationship with all of the boys here from the start so you could see he would be leading in the future. Scotland cannot make a mistake choosing Robbo.

“Being from the first line up of Liverpool players is a message as well. There are not many Scotland players at other top clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United.

“So yes, he’d be a good choice as Scotland national team captain. If they pick him I’d have no problem with that.”
