Jordan Henderson has highlighted two moments from the past fortnight that have been enthusiastically greeted within the Liverpool squad.

Nathaniel Clyne returned to full training last week with the rest of the squad having missed all of the 2017-18 season so far due to a back issue.

Meanwhile, after also reaching full fitness, Danny Ings made his Champions League debut as a second-half substitute in the 5-0 win at FC Porto.

And Henderson has explained why both pieces of news have been well received by the rest of their teammates.

The captain wrote in ‘This is Anfield’: “Nathaniel Clyne is back training full-time with the group, after a season disrupted by injury until now. This is a massive boost for us because Clyney is international quality and will 100 per cent make us even more competitive between now and the season finishing.

“He’s one of those players that can be taken for granted, because in and around football he’s extremely low-key. But he is someone who his fellow professionals rate as highly as you can imagine.

“He was back in the sessions in Marbella and I could see the lads looking at each other and thinking how sharp he is. He’s come back in fantastic shape and he’s a naturally fit person anyway. It’s great for Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who have both been incredible for us, because having someone of Clyney’s quality back will only push them on more and make them improve even further.

“The other moment from the past fortnight that I wanted to mention was Danny Ings making his Champions League debut. Understandably there is focus and praise on Mo, Bobby and Sadio – rightly so – they’re delivering for us week in and week out. But having players with the quality of Danny Ings and Dom Solanke snapping at their heels in training every day means they have to perform.

“Everyone knows the journey Danny has been on and I think sometimes the fact he is so likeable means people forget his quality on the pitch. Ingsy is an inspiration to any footballer or any athlete for that matter, because he shows that ability and attitude have to go hand-in-hand to achieve your dreams.

“Sadio’s hat-trick grabbed the headlines in Porto, but Danny coming on for Bobby to feature in the best club football competition in the world for the first time in his career was just as big a moment for the team. It was his first Champions League appearance, but it absolutely will not be his last.”
