If his commanding performance on debut was not proof enough, Virgil van Dijk emphasised with words that he does not feel added pressure after his move to Liverpool.

The Netherlands international sealed a switch to the Reds from Southampton on New Year’s Day having impressed on the south coast during his two-and-a-half years in the Premier League.

Van Dijk enjoyed a dream debut for the club, heading home the winning goal with six minutes left to defeat Everton in the FA Cup third round at Anfield last Friday.

With league leaders Manchester City the visitors this weekend, the No.4 opened up to a legendary predecessor – Jamie Carragher – about why he is approaching his new challenge with confidence.

“The size of the club, the fans, the players, the manager – the whole package here is amazing,” Van Dijk explained in an interview with Sky Sports.

“The atmosphere at every home game especially, and the travelling fans, is amazing. I’m just very happy to play for the club.

“It doesn’t make me nervous. It’s a compliment to me for the hard work I’ve put in so far, that Liverpool were willing to pay that much money. I can’t change that anyway.”
