Getting Home – Travel options

Liverpool FC, Merseytravel and local transport operators have worked together to help make your journey to and from the ground more convenient for you. Public transport is the easiest and most efficient way to travel home from Anfield.

If you are visiting on a match day, please allow additional time getting away from the stadium as the surrounding area can get very congested post match.

The club would like to remind fans using Wirral Line rail services to travel to Anfield on a match day that this service will be affected for the remainder of the 2016-17 season. This is due to the Wirral loop line track renewal taking place from January 3 to June 18, 2017. Services on the Northern Line will not be impacted.

Fans should be aware that alternative services will be busier than normal during this period and should allow extra time when travelling to and from the ground.

Road Closures (Match day)

Please note that several road closures operate immediately after a match to allow pedestrians to leave Anfield Stadium safely. These are in place for approximately 45 minutes after the match.

By Bus And Soccerbus (Soccerbus Match day only)

BusBus is fast, frequent and convenient with ‘express’ services that will get you back from Anfield and into Liverpool City Centre.​ Please visit the Mersey Travel link here to view local bus time tables.

The 917 will be ready to depart from Walton Breck Road straight after the final whistle.  A group of 4 costs £12 return. An adult single ticket will cost £2 and U19’s can travel for just £1. Single tickets can be purchased form a pod on 96 Avenue, open 3 hours before kick-off. Please note that a return ticket is classed as a day ticket and can be used on any Stage Coach bus on the day of purchase. Supporters who show their return ticket at the Stadium will receive a 20% discount on hot drinks.

From Walton Breck Rd take the 26 to Liverpool ONE bus station, the 501 to Lime St, the 17 to Queen Square Bus Station, and the 68/168, which operates between Bootle and Aigburth.  The 14 bus stop is on Breck Rd, approx. 10 minutes away.

Whilst the road closure is in operation, the 19 bus stop will be located on Walton Lane (at the bottom of Walton Breck Road). When road closure is lifted, the service will resume along Robson Street/Sleepers Hill. The 19 bus runs every 30 minutes after the match.

Soccer Bus

The Soccer Bus runs from Anfield to Sandhills station for trains on the Merseyrail Northern Line every match day. The Soccer Bus runs for 50 minutes after the final whistle (subject to availability). A return journey costs £2 and a one way ticket costs £1.60. Soccer Bus is free with a valid trio, solo, save away ticket or concessionary travel pass. The bus is fully accessible.

By Train

TrainIf you’re travelling from outside the Liverpool area…     

Lime Street Railway Station is Liverpool’s mainline station for regional and national journeys. It is two miles from Anfield.

Taxis are also available from Anfield to Lime Street station and usually cost between £7-£9.

TransPennine Express has direct services to Scarborough and Newcastle calling at stations from across the north of England including Manchester, York, Leeds, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Durham, Darlington, Warrington Central and Liverpool South Parkway. If you’re travelling within the Liverpool area…

Merseyrail operates regular services across 67 stations throughout Merseyside. Passengers can get regular services to Ellesmere Port, Chester, West Kirby and New Brighton on the Wirral Line and Southport, Ormskirk, Kirkby and Hunts Cross on the Northern Line from Liverpool Lime Street. Take advantage of park and ride. A number of Merseyrail stations have car parks. You can find them here

Passengers using Soccer bus can get a Southport/Hunts Cross train from Sandhills. Passengers travelling to Kirkdale will need to change at Moorfields. Services run on this line every 15 minutes throughout the day and evening Mondays to Saturdays and every 30 minutes on Sundays.

Why not combine the train and cycling? Merseyrail allows cycles.

Many mainline rail services call at Liverpool South Parkway, you can get a train to here from Sandhills station.

By Taxi

TaxiMatch days

Taxi pick up points are available outside of the Stadium and on major routes, making it easier to reach home. Taxis to the city centre usually cost between £7-£9. To view the available taxi pick up points please refer to the map above.

Taxi ranks are located on Sleepers Hill and Oakfield Road pre and post-match.

Taxis will also be available at the taxi rank in front of the KOP one hour after the final whistle.

Non Match day

Taxis are available at the rank in front of the Kop.

On Foot

Both Sandhills and Kirkdale stations on Merseyrail’s Northern line are less than a 30 minute walk from Anfield. The Club advises fans to stick to the recommended walking routes which are clearly signposted. Alternatively, you may wish to put the following postcodes into Google Maps to help assist with the walking route:

Sandhills Station: L5 9XN

Kirkdale Station:  L20 2BN

The city centre can be reached in approx. 40 minutes by foot from the Stadium. If you’re unsure of the way you can speak to any member of staff who will point you in the right direction.

By Car


Match days

On match days the Anfield area is very busy and roads can get congested. On leaving the car parks you may be directed in to a one way system to help with the flow of traffic away from the Stadium.
